thx all, after bryan did some..........

driver updates, etc, he finally had to restore the computer to before the 8.1 download and its working fine now.

i tried to warn him about windows 8 but he seemed to forget about all the bad reviews of it and got it anyway.

the lesson is, if you get windows 8. dont get the upgrade to 8.1.

leave well enough alone. i will stick with my windows 7, which i had to pay extra for.
