I'm a bit surprised that such an article isn't accompanied by sales figures, at least from recent Apple earnings reports.

Apple really isn't putting much effort into their Mac line. The Mac Mini hasn't been updated to Haswell and the Mac Pro was recently updated but I don't think that customers are getting them yet - they can order them though. The MacBook Pro updates were this fall.

The MacBook Air is still basically the same design as back in 2007. I think that it is still selling quite well as a low-end model but it really needs a better screen.

I'm still using my 2008 MacBook Pro and there are lots of other people still using older tech. Older MacBook Pros still command a good price in the used market (my laptop sells for about $500 - $600) and I don't see a particularly good reason to upgrade right now as I'd have to spend a lot of time moving my configuration over.

I think that MacBooks suffer from the same problem that Windows laptops do only moreso because the configurations have stronger processors that mean that customers can get a longer usable life out of them. That combined with doing more things on mobile devices means that there's less of a need for a fast PC.

Robert, I don't trust those numbers. Digging into them a little more, it's possible that those numbers represent devices sold through resellers and don't reflect actual market share.

Next time you go to a Starbucks, see how many people have MacBooks vs. Chromebooks open.

"By NPD's tallies, Chromebooks accounted for 21% of all U.S. commercial notebook sales.."

Well?
"Twenty-One Percent of... Come Again?"

Whatever the number Intel should have a goodly part of the total sales. Acer and HP Chromebooks reviews are positive and appear to be selling well. Frankly I don't why anyone would want one but ?
