#152438 RE: entdoc #152431

thanks entdoc and you know where I'll be heading with this news, especially since Arthur Levinson takes the helm at "Calico" and BMGF may just need someone at their helm that knows much about Mabs and small molecules and collaborations if they want their money to be working efficiently. I'd say the way "immunotherapy" will rapidly advance... it makes much of the BMGF charities or investments in certain areas null and void and they have to redirect in how money is spent or with whom they collaborate with for the best long-term value.

.. just taking a look at Arthus Levinson / Susan Desmond-Hellmann

At Genentech, Susan Desmond-Hellmann supervised one of the hottest streaks in drug development history. Left independently wealthy when she resigned after the big Roche takeover,

"She's a very nice person, so this did not come naturally to her," Arthur Levinson, the legendary ex-CEO of Genentech, recently told The New York Times. "She became a tough leader, tough in a positive sense. She was willing to make tough calls without much difficulty."

By putting herself at the head of one of the biggest trends in research, Desmond-Hellmann will inevitably help craft a template for academic/corporate partnerships that others will follow. Long-term success would also help provide a new and important source of research funding at a time federal subsidies are flagging.

I didn't realize how close Google execs admired Arthur Levinson, which started many years ago:

“Art has been a key part of Google’s success these past five years (2005-2009), offering unvarnished advice and vital counsel on every big issue and opportunity Google has faced,” Schmidt said.

“Though he leaves as a member of our Board, Art will always have a special place at Google.”

Despite his remarks, it’s perfectly conceivable that there was simply too much outside and internal pressure for Levinson to continue to sit on both boards. Now that Levinson is departing the Google board after all, there are no longer any ties between both companies on a director level, although former Vice President Al Gore continues to reside on Apple’s board while also serving as a senior advisor to Google.

Makes me think of former Al Gore advisors who were part of investing in Peregrine and now we have Al Gore senior advisor to Google as of June 2013 and then Google announces 3 months guess what is announced: Calico who hired Arthur Levinson

Al Gore added a position as Senior Advisor at Google.
