Nobel Prize Winner Sir Harold W. Kroto Joins NaturalNano’s Scientific Advisory Board
Nobel Laureate’s Discovery Helped Launch the Field of Nanotechnology
December 14, 2006 06:00 AM Eastern Standard Time
ROCHESTER, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--NaturalNano, Inc. (OTCBB: NNAN), a materials science company, today announced that Nobel Laureate and famed nanotech pioneer, Sir Harold W. Kroto, Ph.D., has joined its Scientific Advisory Board.

“The NaturalNano Scientific Advisory Board is an outstanding brain trust. I am very excited to be working alongside Dr. Kroto. His co-discovery of fullerenes represented a revolution in materials science and helped to usher in the Nanotechnology age.”

Dr. Kroto received the 1996 Nobel Prize for Chemistry, along with colleagues Richard Smalley and Robert Curl, Jr., for the discovery of a new form of carbon, C60, considered one of the most important cornerstones in the development of Nanoscience. Much of today’s Nanotechnology research and commercialization focuses on the tubes and wires derived from these spherical carbon molecules, named “buckyballs” after architect Buckminster Fuller whose geodesic domes they mimic.

Dr. Kroto stated, “There is no doubt in my mind that the field of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology is the most exciting frontier science of the 21st century. It has the promise to create advances fully commensurate with those made by chemistry in the 20th century – as groundbreaking as Penicillin, polymers, DNA technology, or computer chips.

“To make this promise a reality will require a spirit of innovation and pragmatic approach implicit in the strategy that NaturalNano is pioneering in its development of naturally occurring materials. Nanoscience and Nanotechnology represent a tremendous opportunity for advancement and NaturalNano is not only developing products that can be put into use now but also exploring future novel and exciting innovations.”

Before becoming a Francis Eppes Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Florida State University in 2004, Dr. Kroto taught at the University of Sussex in England for 37 years. In 2001, he won the Royal Society's prestigious Michael Faraday Award, given annually to a scientist who has done the most to further public communication of science, engineering, or technology in the United Kingdom. Dr. Kroto has also contributed major research in spectroscopy, liquid-phase interactions, and quantum chemistry.

His exceptional achievements have inspired fellow inventor and NaturalNano Scientific Advisory Board member, Ray Kurzweil, a recipient of the National Medal of Technology, the MIT Lemelson Prize, and an Inventor Hall of Fame inductee. Mr. Kurzweil said, "The NaturalNano Scientific Advisory Board is an outstanding brain trust. I am very excited to be working alongside Dr. Kroto. His co-discovery of fullerenes represented a revolution in materials science and helped to usher in the Nanotechnology age."

Dr. Kroto’s expertise broadens the range of NaturalNano’s Scientific Advisory Board, which now encompasses surface chemistry, polymer nanocomposites, life sciences, and other related disciplines:
