Nobody really wildcats anymore. A new location outside an existing field will need millions of dollars in seismic surveys before someone will commit to a test hole. It would be a lot of fun to try but you need to do a lot of other work besides seismic such as leasing up lots of land just in case you made a big find. If you have a big find you also need storage, treatment and disposal facilities not to mention a pipeline or a trucking plan. Of course you can always at any stage sell to a Big Co. if the find is enticing.

We had one wildcat location we tried to raise money to drill. It was based on gas seeps from a deep water well that was on the edge of the buried Hatfield Valley. Oil companies are run by accountants who are afraid of their own shadows and we could not make our case to convince a partner. In hindsight it is still interesting but not 100% practical.

The people described in this book no longer exist.
