The problem with dual channel memory is that not only the processor is more expensive, but also the motherboards are more expensive. Athlon-64 will be a commodity processor and as such must be pared down in price (and board real estate, for mobile use). Many casual desktop users would prefer to have more peripheral ports or a smaller desktop footprint than dual memory channels. More flexibility rather than absolutely maximum performance.

For those who want lots of AMD64 power though, there will be nothing stopping them from using an Opteron 2P workstation that runs the same code as their AMD64 Athlon-64 256KB L2 notebook.
