#140896 RE: The Count #140893

The timing of the release could have been in deference to LG's request as someone here suggested. It appears they have just announced earnings.

I like their handset growth numbers in the last paragraph.

LG Electronics Posts First Profit Increase in 4 Qtrs (Update1)
Jan. 24 (Bloomberg) -- LG Electronics Inc., Asia's second- largest mobile-phone maker, reported its first profit increase in four quarters on handset sales and gains from its flat-panel display subsidiary.

Fourth-quarter net income rose 91 percent to 312 billion won ($319 million) from 163 billion won a year earlier, while sales fell 5.2 percent to 6.2 trillion won, the Seoul-based company said today in a regulatory filing. Operating profit, which excludes gains from its flat-panel subsidiary, increased to 95 billion won from 94.9 billion won a year earlier.

The company was projected to report net income of 197 billion won, operating profit of 217 billion won, and revenue of 6.2 trillion won, according to the median estimate of nine analysts surveyed by Bloomberg.

LG.Philips LCD Co., whose biggest shareholder is LG Electronics, earlier this month posted fourth-quarter net income that jumped ninefold to 328 billion won amid surging demand for liquid-crystal display televisions.

LG Electronics, which in October predicted its mobile-phone shipments would climb to 55 million units in 2005, said earlier this month that it's targeting volume sales of 70 million this year.,/i>
