Mercedes-Benz maker wants to expand Tesla partnership

Daimler AG, the maker of Mercedes-Benz cars, wants to do more projects with Tesla Motors Inc., company officials said yesterday.
The company, which owns a 4.3 percent stake in Tesla, plans to use a Tesla drivetrain in an all-electric version of its Mercedes B-Class compact.
Bodo Uebber, Daimler's chief financial officer, said Tesla is an important part of his company's strategy to create electric-powered vehicles. It currently sells an electric version of the Smart city car and a battery-powered version of its SLS gullwing supercar.
"We should look at more cooperations, so we like the stake," Uebber said.
The statements came after Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche vowed to surpass BMW AG's sales. BMW plans to roll out its own electric city car and plug-in hybrid sports car.
"Mercedes, with respect to the electric car, it's a very niche operation for them," auto analyst Alan Baum said. "The product Tesla provides actually fits rather well with them, and the relationship between the companies has been a good fit" (David Welch, Bloomberg, Oct. 31). -- JE
