Anyone that took science classes at a research university knows how once a professor gets a name money rolls in as long as his name is on the final results no matter whom is doing the work.
No kidding - in grad school (I was an RA), my prof's name was first on every single paper produced by his grad students despite the fact that he wrote zero of the content in nearly every case. Getting grants to pay for his students was almost his entire job, besides teaching a few classes and mentoring the grad students. A few years after I got my M.S. (had no interest in a PhD), he published a book, the first book to be published in that narrow field in over 20 yrs, that was 90% chapters containing parts stolen directly from our theses, verbatim! The only mention of any of us was a one line "thank you to these people" in the prologue. Guess I shouldn't whine - got a free M.S. and a stipend to boot.
