#8146 RE: basserdan #8145

Thanks for this hurricane post, Dan.

Weather appears to be more severe in recent years. Last October Sandy hit New York and New Jersey very hard. But the hurricane had a lot of energy to knock many trees down in my neighborhood outside of Boston.

The power companies and individuals are now cutting or trimming branches that are over lines and lines to houses. In fact, three years back, there were old hemlock trees along my neighbor's property that were like missiles landing on to my property during storms. I told my neighbor and she was reasonable, as she recognized the danger, and had 29 hemlocks cut down. Needless to say, my garden now has a lot sun; it is far more productive. Plus the winters are warmer as the back of my house faces in a southern direction.

I guess my point is that hurricanes benefit people, if action is taken beforehand. For example, there are a lot of wood chips for those who want to use sweat equity and spread them on their garden paths. I will have limbs trimmed this winter and I will keep all of the chips. Since the limbs overhang the roof of my house, my water buckets on that side are not fully effective in collecting water; they will next spring.

Thanks again
