What does a refinery, which operates at very high temperatures, have to do with JBII's low temperature process?

A direct-fired furnace heats the crude oil to 650-750°F (343-400°C) before it enters the flash zone of the atmospheric tower.

That's dangerously close to the temperature at which sulfur vaporizes. I didn't bother to look up higher temperatures in the process which I'd guess there are -- and nowhere near JBII's process. That's part of the reason why all sorts of shit can be in the feedstock that doesn't end up in the fuel.
