More dollars worth of Dawson Creek building permits were issued in the first quarter of 2013 than in Fort St. John, according to recently released information by B.C. Stats.

Approximately $9.3 million worth of total building permits were issued during that time period in Dawson Creek, while only $7.7 million worth was issued in Fort St. John, the statistics say.

For Dawson Creek, this represents about 68 per cent growth in the dollars of permits than were issued during a similar time period in 2012, and 30 per cent less in the dollars of permits than were issued during the same time period in Fort St. John.

The B.C. average during this time period dropped 16 per cent. The Canadian average during this time period was dropped 8 per cent.

Part of the reason for the high number of permits was the high number of industrial building permits that were issued within Dawson Creek. About $5.7 million worth of permits was issued for the first quarter of 2013, an increase of 375 per cent from a similar time period for 2012.

For comparison, 2012 only saw about $6 million worth of industrial building permits, and 2010 only saw $5 million worth of industrial building permits for Dawson Creek, B.C. Stats goes on to say.

No industrial permits were issued within the first three months for Fort St. John for 2012 or 2013, according to building reports available on the city’s website, but this could change by the end of the year.

Dawson Creek had the fifth-highest total amount during this quarter, according to the information presented by B.C. Stats.

Both cities had less commercial building permits in the first quarter of 2013 than they did in the same period as last year.

Dawson Creek had about $1.1 million in commercial building permits, while Fort St. John only had $984,000 – a drop of 64 and 50 per cent, respectively.

Not surprisingly, given the two populations sizes, Fort St. John had a higher total number of residential building permits in the first quarter, at 26.

Dawson Creek only had nine in the same period, but it represented a growth of about 29 per cent over the same period in 2012.

The article is good for those doing business in Dawson Creek, but it has nothing to do with MCIC, or its ability to get funding. The e-mail response from the mayor had much more to do with MCIC than the newspaper you are reading. Let us know when the paper has something about MCIC closing the deal.
