Millions and millions of meters have been given away, and not just by J&J. Bayer, Abbott and Roche employ the same formula. So does Gilette, Ray-O-Vac, Sears Craftsman, etc. etc. Companies for years have given away the razor for the razor blade business or the ratchet for the wrench set business. And in each case, in our current world of standardization the patent holder loses, because he should.

Apple argued exactly the same points in their case with Samsung, that their phones were all sold at a loss so they could pick up a share of the phone plans and software after market. And they first won (in the same court in San Jose, CA) and then they lost, and Samsung with their Galaxy S III was right all along. Consumers will buy a cheaper better alternative if given the chance.
