Zeev, you surely can't be serious. Turkey fought a guerilla war that killed a lot more Kurds than Saddam ever did to prevent that.

Zeev RE: Kurds,
I rercently listened to one of the Kurdish leaders and this was my take. He stated they are not interested in a separate Kurdish state rather a part in a freely elected Iraqi gov't representing all the interested parties throughout the country. He did state they want control of their local decision making regarding their culture and daily affairs of their people. In my mind I remember thinking it was kind of like our for fathers granting stroger rights to the states.

That's exactly why Turkey is moving troops in,to prevent seizing of oil fields by the Kurds,and a move to a Kurdish state.Turkey and Iran both seem to have an interest in Northern Iraq,Kurds seem to be caught in the middle again,and are downplaying independence talk,talking the "united Iraq" game.We need an armored division in there to keep things from getting out of hand w/Turkey and Kurds.

What would be the advantages of doing so?
Now that borders have been drawn and lasted for longer than the average human life, wouldn't redrawing them cause more instability.

With a change of regime in Iraq coming up, there will be enough instability. Why add more confusion?

Anyhow, the Kurds are ethnically the same as gypsies found in many European countries. They are a migrant travelling people and as a whole still haven't settled. It is not intuitive to me that borders should follow the movements of people. If there are a lot of immigrants who are Chinese or blacks or Mexicans or Cubans or whatever in a certain part of the USA, would you support giving them their own state to reflect the ethnic make up of the region?

How about a completely different subject, should we support the national aspirations of the Kurds and grant them an independent state carved out of Northern Iraq, Northeastern Syria, Southeastern Turkey and a small chunk in the Northwest of Iran?Undo the mistake Churchill did in 1922.
============================================================
Your joking right? IF you are serious,how to you propose doing this? Are we to go to war with the Turks and the Syrians now that we are in Iraq? The Turk's will never agree to this ever. They killed more Kurds than Saddam ( funny that is rarely mentioned ) in recent times. You think Syria is just going to say Suuure no problem and Hand over a piece of their land to the Kurds because we say so? Iran has been buying arms from the Russians in recent years and are currently building a nuclear power plant with the Russians help. How is it we are going to convince Iran to donate to this cause? Beyond all that
what is the rest of the Arab world going to think of this?

If one wants to see the Kurds suffer even more then one would support their independence. I would support something like that over a period of time but the Turks will not go for it now and we don't need to get their dander up.
