Years ago I worked at a gas station and one of my duties was to run a long pole with graduated markings down a hole to record how much gas was left in the tanks. It was kind of like the oil dipstick in a car except twenty feet long.
It was not a real big hole but a clever person could figure out a way to drop a container down the hole on a rope and pull up gas like an old time bucket well.
