We have a culture that is still adapting to the value of information. Many individuals in western society who would NEVER steal money readily steal information--or abuse it. Our ethical education in the home as well as in academic and professional circles is lagging. Aerial surveillance is just information--in another form. The Chiefs of Police tried to get ahead of this problem with a statement of ethics but it is an endemic problem IMO. It, like medical ethics, will be one of the struggles of our time IMO.
I had my longest briefing yesterday on domestic OSINT--open source intelligence techniques applied to CRIMINAL activity in the United States. The demonstrations I saw were amazing. The next step is that private contractors will use those same skills and tools for CIVIL cases. Or for-fee services will use the same analysts and software to do it for-fee for attorneys. Actually, I could probably get Coastie a job if he were to take the ten week Boot Camp! And he could get his clearance.
Information/data ethics. Start thinking about it! And it does apply to the data that WSGI products will gather. Best regards, IJO
