There are certainly no "hard" numbers yet, so clearly VRNG is basing the merits of its claims on the "informal" numbers (for lack of a better word) that the GOOG case has already created parameters around. Certainly they are squishy, but there is indeed a range, albeit potentially wide.

The relative size of MSFT compared to GOOG (i.e. the ad revenues are significantly less for MSFT vis-a-vis GOOG, and therefore any resulting damages would be very small as well), it is conceivable that MSFT may view the potential costs of fighting this in court to outweigh any benefits and that it may be a simple economic decision to conclude that it is simply cheaper to settle than to fight.
