There are anti-static wrist-bands specifically for this type of work. They usually incorporate a resistor to soften sudden voltage differences. Professionals should have one.
For most people, there are a few simpler solutions.
If possible, avoid working in a room with a carpeted floor. I like the kitchen. Avoid "shuffling" your feet or "sliding" your fingers on things. Don't let your skin get too dry. Try to keep contact with the chassis with one hand while working. Don't touch the conducting parts of connections with your fingers. Remember to disconnect the power, and wait a minute or two for the residual charge to dissipate before you begin. Rehearse cussing beforehand so you're not at a loss for words at critical moments. If you have a camera, take a few pictures first. And save any parts you have left over after you're done -- the guy at the repair shop will need them.
