The same thought came to my mind but differently. I was thinking if Samsung windows tablet is that great, how come it is not being advertised and touted as such. This thing should be all over the wires. Intel does provide marketing $ to its partners including Samsung.
Then I realized it is not that simple. Intel does not have its own stores to sell these. It does not have channels to move the products like others ODMs do. It also does not know which models will sell best-stand alone, convertible, or any other. The same is true of the ODMs at the moment too. That is why there is a caution. It could be hurting Intel in short run but eventually it will succeed.
I am also concerned that all ODMs are selling ARM based tablets as well. I am not sure their mind is set on windows based tablets yet.
Two variables-Intel processor and windows 8 both brand new are not helping.

re:I think if Intel can make a device and resolve such issues, I might not be against them trying it out after all.

Intel should have done this 1 year ago. The whole ultrabook & win8 launches have been disasters. The main reason is that PC OEMs dont have Intel's best interests in mind. They have their own. And for the likes of HP & Dell, they could care less about consumer PCs at this point. They are all about enterprise services.

Intel management has been a disaster, & its only getting worse. I have no idea what Intel is doing with all the high "fixed" costs coming on line in 2013 with respect to Fabs. If they dont have the demand to fill the capacity, the financials will get ugly & we can easily see a $15 stock price. I hope Intel management knows what its doing, but at this point, many have zero faith in them. The fact they give no updates or refuse to talk to the media/analysts just makes things worse.

Nothing is available. Not the Asus Taichi, the Lenovo Ideapad Yoga, Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro, Dell XPS 12. They are either all "sold" or "unavailable". They already have a big barrier to entry called "price", they DO NOT need another one.

Is lack of availability necessarily a sign of laziness? Do you think maybe demand has been higher than expected - a sign of good news...?

This is what you get when you put the power of what to manufacture in the hands of others. This also is happening in the phone/tablet market. Part of the consequence is 22nm devices in 2014. Way late.
