Since late 2001 there has been an increasing demand in the US Federal Government sector for rugged Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) computing devices, especially in the areas of Homeland Security and Defense. Microsoft’s introduction of the Tablet PC Operating System in late 2002 has completely revolutionized the Pen Tablet PC market. The Tablet PC can now be used as a tool that is flexible and powerful enough to support a wide range of applications ranging from digital inking capabilities for initiating and completing data entry and form completion functions, or used to efficiently transfer large data and graphics files between wireless mobile users and fixed locations.

As the Department of Defense has deployed hundreds of thousands of troops to many remote locations throughout the globe, and as Homeland Security officials have tightened security at airports, border crossings, and other ports of entry, it has become apparent that a need exists for tablet computer systems that are "tough enough" and "rugged enough" to be deployed in a variety of locales under very harsh and at times, primitive conditions.

The Xplore iX Family of rugged tablet computers are designed to be used in a wide variety of mobile computing applications where these environmental extremes can make virtually all standard non-rugged devices insufficient and undependable. Typical examples of applications where the iX Family can be used to support the most demanding mission requirements are in the areas of:

* Force Protection
* Aircraft and vehicular maintenance
* Supply inspection and record keeping
* Logistics support
* Command, Control, Communication, Computers and Intelligence (C4I).
* Mapping, Construction Engineering, and Artillery Placement
* Personnel data tracking during troop deployments
* Military Healthcare record keeping and support at mobile field hospitals
* Waterway and construction management
* Border Security functions
* Disaster emergency management functions and data collection
* FAA aircraft inspections
* Gathering field data for census takers
* Gathering data related to land use or mapping
* Tracking of inmate movement and facility physical security at Federal Prisons
* Physical security at Federal office buildings
* Tracking data by agricultural inspectors
* Any Federal Law Enforcement functions
* Public Health Service and veterans hospitals

The Xplore iX Family of products is exclusively available on GSA Schedule #GS-35F-4076D through Dell Marketing at http://www.dell.com
