Actually it is a very relevant pole. The survey ECDC did does have merit about people wanting a way to make sure there kids were safe. And I believe that many parents would agree. However dissent from a few plus a little ACLU involvement because they love this stuff can ruin it easily.
I personally like the idea but it is not a simple as opt out and everyone will think its okay. If any teacher or parent opposes it than just like in TX the news picks it up demonizes it and you are done. So don't count your chickens before they are hatched. Also school systems signing up for anything go through quite a process to vet the provider and here ECDC may fail again due to bad financials and all there full reporting showing unpaid bills etc.
Also control of the hosting of the data and privacy questions will certainly come up. It is conceivable that they could all want it on both sides and legally and network security wise it takes forever to get done. The fact that there has been no PR for it shows no signed agreement yet. That may come or it may take a year to jump through hurdles who knows. And once its up since its an untested system in the real world I am sure there would be an opt out for the schools if unhappy. So getting revenue for a long time may be an issue while the expense of installing and getting it up and running for the "free" system to the schools will hit ECDC financially like a ton of bricks.
