Deciding the case is the first thing that a judge does. Once she has made up her mind, it then becomes the job of the law clerkd to craft an opinion which legally justifies the position which the judge has taken. Of course, if during their research to write the opinion, the law clerks find something which would indicate that the judge had erred, they are obliged to inform her and then, the decision would be reversed, before it was ever written.
