The Record reports that Scott J. Smith, who is no longer employed by the Hasbrouck Heights Police Department, was arrested in January 2010 on over 40 different charges, ranging from receiving stolen property to obtaining drugs by fraud.
Authorities say that Smith, 33, of Hasbrouck Heights, was visiting his friend John Amendola, 39, in Amendola's home at 311 Union Avenue Sunday when a confrontation broke out between the men. Smith then allegedly stabbed the man — a friend of nearly 20 years, police say — several times with a knife.
