IB has low fees, a steep learning curve with platform fees that require active trading to make it payoff. Another consideration in opening a new a/c is tax reporting. When looking at new accounts free gainskeeper is winner IMO.

Can you expand on why Ameritrade will not let you trade abroad? I am in Italy as you know and I haven't had any issues. What was the reasoning?

fwiw.. my sister has an acct. w/ AMTD & she moved to Singapore several years ago. Her husband, also American wanted to open acct. w/ AMTD & they wouldn't allow due to differences between Sing. & US govns. over financial disclosures, I think. So I know existing accts were ok. If you had one before moving abroad you could continue using it.
Last month sis wanted to wire to acct. & was having more problems. I called AMTD & got 3 different answers from 3 people. Then called wire dept. at 1 888 723 8504 ext. 3. Explained situation & amount to transfer. Was told to use standard wiring instructions plus add Swist code FNBOUS44 which is international ID for First National Bank etc. at AMTD.
Incomming wire showed in acct. 4 hours after sent for next day trading. So if you have AMTD acct. call above number cause rules change often & no one else there seems to know. Hope that helps.
