Hurricane Katrina-Churches in our area are coordinating efforts to help these poor folks- the need is staggering. We are 10 hours away from New Orleans and they are here- the hotels are full...Received this from our Church office and am forwarding it- Red Cross is great but 50% is needed there for operating expenses- donations to a church will go 100% to the refugees that need it. ( and , yes this IS my Church- I am a Southern Baptist! ha! SCARE YA with that!-LOL) We are just beginning to get them the help they need here: I cooked and donated food and our daughter helped serve tonight.she said it was a real blessing and the people were soooooooooo grateful! We all want to help and this is just one place....
Here is the latest update on the 700 - 1000 Hurricane Katrina evaucee's
that are here in Brenham. Many more evaucees will be arriving over the
next several days as the entire city of New Orleans is being evacuated.
* St. Marys Catholic Church at 701 Church St. is being designated the
Official Red Cross Shelter. Any evacuees needing assistance (shelter,
medical, food, etc.) must reigster there for official assisitance and aid .
Once they register, theyre input into a national database where they can
hopefully reconnect with their loved ones.
* Brenamites are being encouraged to donate money thru our local churches,
rather than the Red Cross because of the 50% administration costs. They
need money right now more than ANYthing!
There are many babies here without formula and diapers. I know that you
can donate to
Brenhams First Baptist Church P.O. Box 600
Brenham, Texas 77833-0600
Hurricane Katrina fund.
* Some people are collecting clothing and canned goods, etc. But, there
is HUGE need for people to help sort the clothing, etc. I will update more
later on when and where.
* HEB is helping the evacuees with groceries, but I dont know to what extent.
* There are literally hundreds of people here in Brenham that couldnt even
find hotel rooms. Many of them have been congregating in parking lots and
sleeping in their cars.
* There is one family at a local hotel here who had to leave behind 21
family members. They lived 5 blocks away from one of the levees that
broke. They opted to send only the women and children because they were
limited on vehicle space to transport them out of Louisiana.
* There are people here who, until last night when a group of Brenham youth
delivered pizza, had not eaten since Sunday.
* There are people here who are so distraught by this knowing their homes
and in some cases, family members are gone have expressed that they do
not wish to live. One man last night told a volunteer that if he had a gun
hed use it on himself right here and now.
What can you do?
* You can pray for these people that their needs are met and they are
treated with kindness and dignity, especially while in our midst! Remember
we may be the only Bible they will ever read!
* You can donate money! This is something they desperately need right now.
Brenhams FBC is attempting to see if they can purchase Wal-Mart cards
with some of the donations.
* Forward this email to your friends here in Brenham. Ask them to share
it and get their friends involved.
Lets show these people that despite their circumstances, they are loved
and lets encourage them anyway way we can!
