Looks to me like the longer term charts are saying that the big volume recently is the more persistent shorts covering... with covering happening at twice the pace that new positions are being entered on the short term charts. Probably a reason that the bigger numbers in the short trade are those getting covered, now ?
Maybe they're just part of the "sell in May" crowd... getting out their riskier positions before going on the vaca... ?
