Second Attempt to Pass Eligibility Bill in Oklahoma

During Oklahoma’s legislative session last year, Sen. Brinkley and Del. Tibbs came very close to passing SB 91 – a Presidential/Vice Presidential Eligibility Bill.

Fast forward to 2012 and Sen. Shortey introduced SB 1569 [http://www.oklegislature.gov/BillInfo.aspx?Bill=SB%201569] a nearly identical bill to SB 91.

Shortey was able to easily get it passed out of the Senate on March 14th with a 34 – 8 vote. It crossed over to the House where it appears to be stalled today.

The House held its first reading on March 15th, the 2nd reading and referral to the Rules Committee the 19th where it then received a "Do Pass" on the 28th of March.

Here’s a summary of the Bill – “Engrossed SB 1569 requires candidates for public office or for the nomination of a recognized political party to provide proof of identity and eligibility to hold office at the time they file a Declaration of Candidacy. The measure requires candidates for the nomination for president to provide proof of identity and U.S. citizenship to the State Election Board which will make the documents available for public inspection.”

Today the House Floor Leader, Dale DeWitt, has yet to schedule SB 1569 for a floor vote. It’s been nearly three weeks since SB 1569 crossed over to the House and was voted out of committee. What is going on?

Is Oklahoma’s House Floor Leader, Dale DeWitt, the member in charge of the floor calendar, intentionally withholding a floor vote on SB 1569? If so, why?

Here’s his email address, let’s ask him when he plans to put SB 1569 to a vote - daledewitt@okhouse.gov
