Surely, this warrants much more severe reaction than shareholder complaints to the author of this article.

I would think legal action by GTE is in order.

If the article is not true (everything we currently know suggests it is false), then it could be interpreted as maliciious, in which case, the writer of the article should, at the very least, lose his job. JMO
