You nailed it on the patents. If the patents are specific enough for the expected growth in cloud computing, then the patents become a powerful licensing tool (at least here in the U.S.).
If their product in heading in the direction the big boys want, and it truly is best in class, and it is protected by patents, then they'll buy the company for its patent value (plus programming experience) to avoid future ligitation (JMO)
