Even if e.Digital weren't insolvent, it offers absolutely nothing to Wencor. IFE offerings and technologies are changing very rapidly and they need to partner with respected IFE speciailists, like IMS, Tracy DeCuir and others if they are to be a long-term success in a highly competitive world.
Despite the convictions of some on agora, the PEA is definitely a more advanced device that has much more sophisticated content protection, logisitcally smooth content updating/battery charging, more content offerings with daily updates (newspapers, etc.), credit card payment with Pay Per View movies (allows royalties to be paid for the specific movies viewed), device agnostic platform, etc.
The fact is that the PEA addresses the shortcomings of the digEplayer. That's the difference in having seasoned IFE experts design a product vs. a company that has a CE mindset.
Not only does e.Digital not have anything to offer, but its bad reputation as a PR generating machine is probably a liability. All of the digEplayer PRs e.Digital has put out may have helped sell stock to the faithful, but I doubt it impressed the IFE industry. Who wants their manufacturer/designer putting out independent PRs that make it sound like they are taking credit for business their customer has done.
Don't you think the IFE industry knows that the PR e.Digital released a week after WAEA last year claiming to have unveiled an embedded digEplayer at that conference was known to be a false claim? The major players know Inflight Canada and likely visited their booth.
The industry might also have noticed that it was e.Digital, not Wencor or Alaska Airlines that released a PR about those entities winning Inflight Online awards. What would the IFE industry think of e.Digital if it knew its shareholders were submitting votes for digEplayer and Alaska? Did anyone wonder how Alaska (which has a few digEplayers on only a fraction of its flights) won best airline IFE?
e.Digital, in its zeal to frequently prime the stock pump with innuendo, embellishment and false claims in PRs, has probably become a joke in a serious industry. If I were Wencor, I'd want to cut the stings as soon as possible.
