you will see this alot with VLCO and other some other stocks as well... sometime after the end of the trading day up until just a few minutes before the next trading session, many of the market makers pull their numbers off of the baord, leaving the appearance of major spread.
But, right before the opening bell, you'll see them post their numbers again, bringing it back to a normal appearance.
