Fascinating connections here. By the way, BTG has an office right next store to IDC.

BTG and Cisco sign agreement for key speech coding patents
BTG plc announced that an agreement has been signed with Cisco Systems Inc. for two key patents relating to speech coding technology, which provide building blocks for transmitting real time speech over the internet, enabling improved internet telephony and video conferencing.

These patents cover the use of speech coding and are believed to be incorporated into the various US national and international standards for Internet telephony and video conferencing. BTG acquired the patents from two sources. The first, from VoiceCraft Inc. California, covers the coding of speech using a simple technique which dramatically increases speech quality. The second patent, from Simon Fraser University in British Columbia, Canada, substantially decreases the delay associated with many speech encoders.

Applications for digitally encoded speech have grown phenomenally in recent months and include the use of voice over the internet, video conferencing, and digital cellular phones. Cisco, based in San Jose, California, is the worldwide leader in networking for the internet.

Ian Harvey, Chief Executive of BTG, said: "Electronics and telecommunications is a fast moving industry and technologies can have an impact in a relatively short time. BTG is creative and flexible in its deal structures to meet the needs of this dynamic market."

Grant Davidson and Allen Gersho combined to invent the VoiceCraft technology. Vladimir Cuperman, Robert Pettigrew and Lloyd Watts were the inventors for the Simon Fraser technology.

Terms of the fully paid up patent assignment were not disclosed.
