OMG! I don't know Gary. Maybe he is a jerk -- I do not know him. You, however, are somewhat mistaken about how self-made people become successful in life. I hope that Gary has a nice personality and has the ability to develop important contacts.
Ask any self-made million/billionaire about the secrets to their success. They will tell you about hard work -- you are correct on this point. These people do work hard. They will also tell you about being lucky -- the right place at the right time, etc. They will tell you about the people -- contacts -- who helped them along their way. They will also tell you about salesmanship -- personality.
I tend to think that the cream will always rise to the top. I think that Bill Gates would have been successful in his business even without his IBM contacts, but he became what he is because of contacts with IBM.
Again, hopefully Gary is putting together important contacts to help INOL grow.
One more point: Many successful people will also tell you that they failed several times before their first triumph.
