Correction the 4G is what was assumed to be purchase for 2.5B not 2G, 3G or anything else. It is not known but assumed AAPL bought the 4G outright and gave rights to the partners. I assumed base on current market info IDCC's 4G is worth 4.5-5B alone than you add in 2G, 3G, compression, engineering staff, leadership on standard bodies, and cash. Add it all up and 7-10B is not far fetched. So in reverse AAPL got no tranction on the standard bodies, none of the engineers that worked on the patents (note it is like Andy Warhol stepping in for Picasso to finish a painting), no additional cash, ownership but shared rights, and just one last aspect of technology that is cooled the patents and know how to connect across heterogeneous wireless networks seamlessly.
