Do you have Cyberlink Media Direct installed on your system?

If so, try this
Click Start -> Run
Type services.msc
This will launch the Windows XP services.
Locate the PCMService.exe and select it and click STOP.

If that corrects it, then you need to set the properties of
the service to not start automatically or it will return after
you reboot.

There are a number of complaints on the internet about this
product causing this symptom.

lol, that was my next suggestion.....since you messed around with stuff.....
