#8454 RE: Hongcouver #8452

Hongcouver....A very intriguing follow-up article, thanks again very much.

The article seems to reflect the usual pattern that I have become aware of.

Government pushes big farms for responsibility, requires penalties for supplying clout to this, big farms talk and negotiate, while paying attorneys and outside marketers toward their contrary "interests", pressure builds on both sides, followed by stalemate.

As noted, a portion of the big farm money that goes toward lawyers and marketers could just as easily go toward solving some of the problems.

But that seemingly win-win solution doesn't seem to interest these big poultry producers.

Poultry Litter Talks Set for June
05/20/2005
Attorney General Drew Edmondson and representatives from nine poultry companies today said negotiations between the state and industry will resume June 7-9 in Tulsa.

The talks are aimed at resolving issues regarding poultry litter utilization in Eastern Oklahoma and Western Arkansas watersheds. Edmondson is negotiating with Aviagen, Inc., Cargill Turkey Products, LLC., Cobb-Vantress, Inc., George’s, Inc., OK Farms, Inc., Peterson Farms, Inc., Simmons Foods, Inc., Tyson Foods, Inc., and Willowbrook Farms, Inc.

The meetings will be mediated by Judge Thomas Brett, a retired federal district judge from the Northern District of Oklahoma.

The state and the companies say they look forward to the talks and hope the issue can be resolved without litigation. The negotiations will be conducted in closed meetings with both sides signing a confidentiality agreement. All statements from the meetings will be jointly approved.
