Office 2000 should load fine if they gave you the disk. As a workaround you can save your excel documents as works files by using the dropdown arrow at the bottom of the "save as" box.

Download and install Sun Java and you should be good to go.

I put office 2000 in my XP_SP2 with little difficulty.

You'll need your XP disc handy when you download office 2000.
