So AMD legitimately pulls within 100 points of Intels free spinning P4

Legitimately? I don't think so. 100 quasihurts but not legitimately.

The next big test for AMD will be getting 512k on the die. AMD has not shown they can do this without a small but significant MHz penalty

AMD has not shown they can do this with even a large penalty. AMD has never been able to produce a large cache die. With their surprisingly poor fab output, they aren't likely to readily move to larger die unless they have no other choice. Come to think of it, I guess they have no other choice.

Bone, Re: So AMD legitimately pulls within 100 points of Intels free spinning P4

One vendor hardly points to legitimate availability. Newegg receives and sells out of units at regular intervals, which suggests that they aren't getting more than a couple hundred units at a time. That's only a fraction of a percent of what AMD is producing.

I wouldn't even consider the 2600+ as legitimately in volume, since most of the entries on Pricewatch continue to list ETA dates. It has been improving much over the past week, but it will likely take them several more weeks and a price cut before they achieve any calculable volumes. And that's for a part that was "launched" 3 months ago.

I don't foresee AMD "catching up" to Intel unless Intel stalls their roadmap in 2003, as some sources have suggested. The lag time between Intel's top Northwood bins and Prescott is AMD's best opportunity to pull ahead in performance, though I don't know how long they will actually be able to claim a performance crown.
