When the IRS does their matching, how closely do they compare? Are they just comparing total proceeds? A lot of times my broker has the cost side of my gains calculations all wrong, often because I have transferred in the position from another broker somewhere along the way (and the basis gets lost except in my own records). I also find my brokers will lump what is truly a return of capital into dividends or even sale proceeds.
