OB, I didnt say the BOP caused the failure, but for some reason the BOP was not used to stop the gas influx, which is what it is designed for. Usually a gas kick is identified very quickly and when the BOP is closed, hydrostatic pressure acting against the influx at the bottom of the well results in only a few hundred PSI readout at surface. In 26 years in subsea I have never seen full bottom pressure reach the BOP except in a controlled manner when flow testing the well.
