Yeah, that would've been the smartest thing he ever did outside the lab, was to get somebody to see to the outside world business.

It may seem unreasonable to us, given the potential amount of money involved, but I would bet part of the explanation was an attachment to his invention, and fear of loss of control, of the patents. Its the same attachment an artist has in surrendering copyright for purposes of sale and marketing of their work. Its a real risk, for both, but especially for inventors.
