MM's make money both directions. They manipulate a direction and set themselves up to profit from that direction. They don't care if their payday comes from up or down movement they are merely following through on what they set themselves up to profit from. Market conditions over which they or us have no control over(like the dividend being cancelled on this particular stock) just happened to play into their hands this time. Another day on another stock it will play the other way and they will profit from the move one way or the other (they have the gas and the brake pedal, whereas we have to wait on traffic lights). It's not personal, it's business and their real-time is a little ahead of ours. They see a directional trend happening and slow or speed up trading before it bites their pocket. They lose sometimes too, but it's not personal. We all know they are informed about the plays here and treat them basically as one. While potentially profitable plays in both directions exist it should be a given that they have an advantage.
