trkhntr,

Please let me clarify one point. Where the "mentally challenged" are concerned, I do not feel the "minimum wage" discussion is relevant. These people have a disability and fall under an entirely different category.
My reference to those that wouldn't improve themselves through education covered persons that "have" the ability to do so, but refuse to use it.
Additionally, there is no dishonor in working for low wages. Quite the contrary, it shows a strength of character, an understanding of responsibility and one's duty to contribute, no matter how trivial or small that contribution might seem.

Of course there are those folks that would have gladly walked one through the welfare process...if you would give them your vote.

"the law of unintended consequences"

I am reading "something new under the sun" by JR McNeill. He tells the story of Thomas Midgly. Not only did this guy figure out that by adding lead to gasoline he could keep the engine from knocking, but he also created Freon as a substitute for other substances used in refrigeration. At some later point he contracted Polio and built a series of ropes and pulleys to allow him to get out of bed and function. They found him one day having been strangled by the mechanism.

McNeil claims that he...."had more impact on the atmosphere than any other single organism in earth history." (p111)

Fascinating book.
