You know.. the specific genes that are responsible for the production of 5-HMF can be spliced into any other plant and grown right here.. like say in.. umm hmmm.. corn maybe.. then those plants can be patented as hybrid..... the 5-HMF can not be patented if it is a naturally occurring compound.. but a hybrid plant designed to produce it can... or it can be synthesized.. and patented.. either way.. the easiest way is to identify the gene or genes.. and get to work on hybridization...simple eh.
