correction, 5-HMF for the treatment of a specific disease can be patented and has been patented by VCU, the gentic modified process you refer to has already been complete with Sorghum-Bicolor and ingredient of Niprisan:

You are correct that the biocompound 5-HMF has an endless stream of supply, that is the point. It's really this simple:

-An African Healer found that a mixture of Sorghum and other herbs showed efficacy in treating those suffering from SCD, he doesn't know why it works but it works
-NIPRID does semi-quasi clinical trials and patents the process and the specific cocktail, they don't have the knowledge or the infrastructure to actually further the research and correctly patent the discovery
-XeChem brings the findings to VCU
-VCU does some additional research and isolates 5-HMF as the biocompound which has the antisickling effect
-VCU patents the "discovery" of 5-HMF as a treatment for SCD
-Don't forget that if you can effectively treat SCD you have also found an immunization vehicle for Malaria
-Many people are paid off on all sides of the round table
-Big Pharma gets involved (enter Basu, Swift and Others) and attempt to sweep away the trail
-The US "Justice" System in its ignorance becomes the vehicle which will allow the theft of Afican Indigenous Knowledge and research and the real discovery
-The SCD sufferers continue to suffer
-The people of Africa get screwed, because they not only lose the dicovery, they lose the commerce and economic stimulus that it would produce
