Re: I presume with no more windows and no more workstations, Intel's plans for making IPF and x86 infrastructure interchangeable have been binned.

Why would you presume that? Microsoft axed Windows XP, not the enterprise editions of Windows.

"Because Windows on x64 systems delivers excellent flexibility and choice, while also enabling a smooth migration from 32-bit to 64-bit applications, Microsoft believes Windows for Itanium-based systems is a stronger offering in the high-end server market, and will continue to promote and offer Windows Server 2003 Enterprise and Datacenter Editions for Itanium-based systems," said a Microsoft spokesperson.

This is an obvious consequence to HP discontinuing their Itanium workstations, which was discussed on this forum previously. Since IPF's server sales far exceeded their workstation sales, this made sense. Microsoft's announcement, therefore, is not a surprise, and it changes nothing with IPF's prospects, IMO. I also don't see how it changes Intel's previous commitment to converging IPF and x86 infrastructure through a common system interface.

Intel's plans for making IPF and x86 infrastructure interchangeable have been binned.

I belive Tukwila was supposed to be the "converged infrastructure" IPF, and according to l'Inq, it's been scrapped and only the codename recycled.
