There are a lot of people out there interested in the ultracheap laptop market. I get questions from people at work on my opinion of laptops for kids in high-school or going off to college and AMD systems are commonly asked about because they have the lowest sticker price.
I usually just explain that it's pretty old technology and that they'd be better off with Intel chips for performance and performance/watt. Some go with AMD and some go with Intel. For many customers, price and recommendations have a big influence on the sale and that includes the service people from Best Buy or WalMart. So AMD is somewhat right in that sense.
I have not seen as many Intel Inside ads on the internet lately. I don't watch enough (any?) television to see if they are doing a lot of ads on TV but branding is important in the computing market.
On the enthusiast end of the market, I see people debating the merits of i5 vs i7 so I think that that BMW-esque approach has worked (I indicated that I liked the scheme quite some time ago).
