Read your own quote - it distinctly says "shares in the float". This only a part (sometimes a very small part) of the total number of shares. Yes, it would have been nice if they'd given both figures but I wouldn't call this a smoking gun. (Heck, not even a stone-cold, unloaded and spiked gun :).

Repeat, $3 a share may very well be reported for 2004.

Companies report based on the weighted average number of shares outstanding.
