I find it hard to believe that the VIA processor + ecosystem is a cheaper alternative than using a low end Sempron, Celeron or for that matter Geode.

Why does this make sense?

Tell that to the people that are still using a PII or Celerons below the 600mhz mark.

You do know what a 1 GHz Via chip is? Basically a scalar
in-order x86, a superanimated 486 with poor cache and
system interface.

It would take a PII clocked pretty far below 600 MHz IMO
to make a 1 GHz Via system seem like a step up.
