#17083 RE: tater salad #17079

Tater, thanks to you for sharing your story. My dad got married in 1928, and the world depression followed a year later. Then my older sis and then me in 1933. My dad was a hard worker and had two jobs through the depression so he had no time for hunting or fishing. I was given a Marlin 81DL bolt .22 somewhere around age 12 or 13, but living at the edge of town there weren't too many rabbit hunting areas nearby, just wheat fields, turnip fields, and horses (west edge of Wichita KS). I got away from the farms and people and got to shoot occasionally, but not much. A very old 12 gauge single shotgun followed, if memory serves it was a Hopkins and Allen. The stock was split so in high school I made a new stock for it out of walnut in shop. I can't recall ever getting to shoot that old shotgun. Both guns were pawned by an uncle of mine (who never could keep a job nor a bottle) while I was away in the Army.
Got a big Boy Scout pocket knife for Christmas around age 12 and no one gave any thought to anyone carrying a knife nor owning guns. Still have a couple of scars where I had the knife slip while whittling wooden guns to become "rubber guns". What a different world we had, and I regret that it was much better than what we have now and what our grandkids will live in.
